On May 20, 2026, Vadim Valentinovich Pokrovsky, a renowned scientist who pioneered the fight against HIV in our country, passed away at the age of 71. He was a laureate of the Russian Federation State Prize and the Russian Government Prize, an Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, an Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a professor, and the head of the specialized research department for AIDS prevention and control at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor.
Vadim Valentinovich's achievements and contributions are well-known in our country and abroad. He pioneered the development of AIDS prevention and control services in Russia, working with the first HIV-positive patients. Under his leadership, large-scale scientific research was conducted, and key elements of the surveillance and response system to the spread of HIV in the Russian Federation were developed and implemented.
Vadim Valentinovich founded a powerful research school of epidemiologists. His students served as experts in the development of key documents on HIV infection published by the WHO and UNAIDS.
V.V. Pokrovsky was an excellent organizer, enjoying recognized authority and the sincere respect of his colleagues. He will forever be remembered by all who knew him as a true professional with a passion for science.
