At the Joint Russian-Burundi Center for the Study and Prevention of Infections in Bujumbura, research work has begun, which Rospotrebnadzor is conducting with specialists from the National Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Burundi.
The monograph “Bacterial and viral pathogens of community-acquired pneumonia in children” has been published

Head of the laboratory – Doctor of Medical Sciences (DSc. in Medicine)

Nataliya A. Gordinskaya

The laboratory has been established in 1968. The main research problem was the study of the molecular structures of bacterial pathogens; as a result of research, methods for differentiating bacteria based on electrophoretic analysis of proteins of various localization were developed. Since 2001, the laboratory has studied the pathogenicity and persistence of respiratory tract bacteria in patients with chronic bronchopulmonary diseases, and since 2011, it has investigated the characteristics of the microbiocenosis of the nasopharyngeal mucosa of people in organized groups.

In recent years, the laboratory has been conducting research into the biological properties of opportunistic bacteria - pathogens of various infectious processes, and has studied the factors of pathogenicity, persistence and sensitivity to antimicrobial drugs. Currently, the laboratory employs 1 doctor of biological sciences, 1 doctor of medical sciences, and 2 candidates of biological sciences.

Directions of activities:

  • Study of biological activity of bacterial strains isolated in various infections, including infections associated with the provision of medical care
  • Assessment of the phenotype and genotype of sensitivity of bacteria to antimicrobial drugs
  • Study of pathogenicity and virulence factors of opportunistic microorganisms using molecular genetic methods
  • Assessment of the ability of bacterial cultures to form biofilm under the influence of various factors

 Laboratory achievements

  • The laboratory has created and is expanding a collection of opportunistic microorganisms - pathogens causing infectious processes.
  • Whole-genome sequencing and analysis of pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance genes of epidemically significant bacterial strains have been carried out.
